A river….

doesn’t run through it…

DSC_0014

Typical of river beds in Arizona right now, this one is dry.  This is the Hassayampa River that “runs” at the edge of Wickenburg. The  Hassayampa is a mostly underground river.  It’s headwaters are just south of Prescott from which it flows south until it joins the Gila River in the area of Hassayampa, AZ.

Although water doesn’t flow in this river right now, horses and dogs do.

So do happy people on ATVs.

There is a poem I found about the perils of drinking the water from the Hassayampa River.

Those who drink its waters bright-
Red man, white man, boor or knight,
Girls or women, boys or men-
Never tell the truth again
…author unknown

It’s a good thing for Tracy and I that there wasn’t any water to drink.  We also were able to obey all posted signs.

Is this one of the rivers that become a "raging river" during rainstorms? Were you standing on a bridge to take the pictures. I'm full of questions tonight!

I know some people who must have drunk the water!
Love the "no fishing" sign. Even when it has water in it, I would think it would still have no fish.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink if there is no water!

Saw my first rattlesnake there, scary! Wonderful shots!

Beautiful pictures. I've never seen the Hassayampa River but have seen several dry rivers down here. I would love to see them when they're running with water but we're never here at the right time.

I'm sorry at tell you that I won't be getting to Wickenberg this trip, much as I would have loved to. Too many other things keeping us grounded here in Surprise.
