And the winner is…

Kathy!!!  Yes, indeed it was “Riders of the Purple Sage” by Zane Grey.  You all make this so much fun and I’m already looking forward to the next one.

As Diane said, this bush is known by several different names.  I have heard them called Texas Rangers, Chihuahuan  Sage, Green Cloud, Silverleaf, and Convent just to name a few.  It is not truly a sage as it belongs to the figwort family and not the salvia family. (Don’t I sound smart! Thank God for Wikipedia)  I have always known the plant by the name Texas Sage and as it’s purple….well you get it.

Thank you all for playing!

Oh, Zane Grey! That name brings me back to my childhood, camping with the family, my mother buried deep in her Zane Grey novel.

This is a beautiful plant! We don't have it here, so it must like sun. Isn't Wikipedia the best?

Oh, it's “Riders of the Purple Sage! Another name for the plant is Purple Cloud, and there is a weird "last man" novel with that name.

By the way, the comments are working again on my Simply This blog. Sorry about that!

I wasn't sure if the bees qualified as "riders" but I thought I'd give it a shot. I also wasn't sure that a Zane Grey book was really a classic but I'll take your word for it! I would have never come up with the answer if you hadn't given the hint as to the name of the bush! I also know it as Texas sage but I felt "purple" could be an alternate name. Love these little fun games.

YAY, good for Kathy. So obvious now. haha

Regarding what I was saying to the eagle: I whistled at him and told him to turn his head so I could take a picture and he did a funny thing with his mouth and I got that shot. MB

BTW: Marengo babies are called that only because they were in a little town called Marengo. Marengo was a railroad town that is not there anymore (even the houses were torn down a couple of years ago) but the name is still there and if you have been around for any length of time you will always call that area Marengo. 'Nuff said! MB
